Committee Update: Active Outreach Committee

In line with the conclusions drawn from the Region 9 Annual Assembly in Athens in October 2024, two subcommittees were formed within the Active Outreach Committee: the Mediterranean Subcommittee and the Central Asian Subcommittee.

The Mediterranean Subcommittee of the Active Outreach Committee was formed to support Greece, Malta, and Cyprus. Its primary focus is on fostering collaboration and helping Cyprus and Malta establish new groups while attracting new members. Both Malta and Cyprus currently have just one group each. Greece, with its impressive growth from just 7 groups to 65 in 14 years, offers invaluable experience and expertise to support these initiatives.

The Central Asian Subcommittee focuses on Iran and its neighbouring countries and territories, including Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, and Kurdistan. Recognizing the presence of Persian-speaking individuals in Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Pakistan, parts of Kurdistan, and border cities between Iran and Afghanistan, two in-person meetings have been successfully held in members’ homes. Furthermore, in western Iran and cities near the Iran-Kurdistan border, a hybrid meeting format combining in-person and online participation has been introduced to expand accessibility.

In conclusion, the formation of the Mediterranean and Central Asian Subcommittees within the Active Outreach Committee marks a significant step forward in expanding Overeaters Anonymous’ reach and impact. These initiatives demonstrate a strong commitment to fostering collaboration, supporting the establishment of new groups, and increasing accessibility for individuals in underserved regions.
